Tung Chung Line Extension
One of the plans is to extend the Tung Chung Line westward into Tung Chung West. This is because there is a lot of potential for development in western Tung Chung. Another station could also be built at Tung Chung East to serve potential developments there.
On the other end of the Tung Chung Line from Hong Kong station, it will be extended along the north of Hong Kong Island. There will be stations at Tamar, Wan Chai Exhibition, and Victoria Park/Northern Causeway Bay. The diagram below is one proposal for the Tung Chung line to reach Chai Wan and the Tseng Kwan O line to reach Central and all the way to Kennedy Town. This plan will eliminate the Island line. Another proposal is for the Tung Chung Line and Tseung Kwan O line to merge at North Point. This means there will be a single line from Tung Chung to Po Lam/LOHAS Park. This proposal will keep the Island line intact and will eliminate the inconvenience for those who use Fortress Hill Station, as they would not need to change lines to reach Causeway Bay and western Hong Kong Island, unlike the proposed plan below. One problem that arises is the Tung Chung Line runs at 15 trains per hour (tph) during peak periods, while the Tseung Kwan O line runs 30 tph. The Tung Chung line cannot run trains more frequently because it shares tracks with the Airport Express on Tsing Ma Bridge, and the signaling cannot handle so many trains at a time. To solve this problem there will be a special train service running from Yau Tong to possibly Hong Kong Station, which runs every four minutes. Combined with the usual Tung Chung line service of 15 tph between Tsing Yi and Hong Kong, which will run to the end of the Tseung Kwan O line in this case, there will be trains arriving every two minutes between Yau Tong and Hong Kong station.
Northern Link
The Northern Link is a line to connect the West Rail Line and the East Rail Line in northern New Territories. This is because those who live in Northwestern New Territories that wants to travel to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chua to cross the border will either have to take a bus, or take the West Rail Line all the way to Hung Hom and change to the East Rail Line there. This process takes almost 90 minutes, when it could be reduced to only 15. This could be done by a new northern link between the West and East New Territories. This line will have termini at Kam Sheueng Road in the west, and Kwu Tung and Lok Ma Chau in the east. This will be extremely convenient for border crossers living in Northeast New Territories, and this line also provides an alternative to the East Rail Line for travelling towards urban Hong Kong. There could possibly be new stations along the line should new developments be built along its route. Should high-rise buildings replace village houses, stations like Kwu Tung, San Tin, Ngau Tam Mei, etc. could be realized. Another benefit of this new line is it will relieve crowding on the East Rail Line by diverting some of the passengers to the west.
South Island Line (East)
The South Island Line is actually split into two lines, a western and eastern section. The eastern section of the South Island Line runs from Admiralty to South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau, and is currently under construction. It was previously planned to open in 2015, but due to construction issues, the planned opening of the line is now postponed to 2016.
There will be five stations on the line, four of which are new, and have a total length of approximately 7km. A tunnel of about 3.5km will be drilled between Admiralty and Ocean Park stations, and then the line will run above ground on a viaduct. This viaduct is full covered and decorated with green tiles to create a lively environment. When the line reaches the island of Ap Lei Chau, it will go underground and terminate at South Horizons. A new depot will be constructed at Wong Chuk Hang to serve South Island Line trains.
